Our Founder’s Story

Founder, Monica Avila, was born in a small farm town in Central California. Monica’s grandmothers and parents taught her how to sew from a young age. She then started to design her own costumes and helped sew them; she even made her own dresses for her Junior Prom.

At the age of 18 she packed her bags and to San Francisco where she studied Fashion Design at the Art Institute of California-San Francisco. While studying there, she was introduced to costume design and fell in love. Monica worked for several theater companies and ballet companies during her college years.

In 2011 Monica graduated from the Art Institute of California with a Bachelors of Fine Arts and one year later move to Los Angeles. Shortly after moving to L.A Monica accepted a job as a designer for a lingerie company followed by an athletic wear company.

Where the Idea Was Born

2014 was one of the biggest and most life-changing-year in Monica’s life. She and her partner found out that they were expecting their first child. Becoming a mother was more life changing for Monica than what she anticipated. Shortly after delivering her daughter, Monica realized that there was a huge gap in the maternity/postpartum industry. Either styles were very cookie cutter or they were too expensive. Why couldn’t there be a middle ground?

One day Monica found herself trying to shop for breastfeeding friendly tops while her daughter was pulling with all of her baby strength to get her (Monica’s) shirt off, and she broke down. All she wanted to do was feed her daughter comfortably while looking cute without breaking the bank. Then that famous lightbulb made an appearance! It dawned on Monica that before her daughter was born she was a chingona clothing designer, why wasn’t she design the postpartum clothing line of her dreams?

Where We are Now

After four years of sitting on this idea, Monica finally decided to go forward with her dream of creating the maternity/postpartum clothing line. Luna and Leche has been a long time coming. Monica’s goal is to include the customer in helping her create upcoming designs by casting votes on finishes, colors and trims YOU would like to see on your clothing.
